How many Electoral College Votes in Michigan? Odds, Predictions for Trump vs Harris

Find out all you need to know about Michigan betting for the US Election, how many Electoral College Votes the state has, odds, and predictions.

Voters in Michigan have been making their voices heard today as they continue to flock to the polls in this US Election.

Michigan is a key player in the election results, as they are one of the key swing states in which the vote could go to either Donald Trump or Kamala Harris.

The US uses the Electoral College system to elect their President, which means a candidate needs to secure a minimum of 270 votes to be elected as a majority.

States will have more Electoral College votes up for grabs depending on the numbers from the latest Census. Each state receives a minimum of three electoral votes: one for each of its two senators and one for its single congressional district.

The state of Michigan gets 15 Electoral College votes, making it a hugely important state for both parties. Only nine states get more Electoral College votes, so candidates are normally keen to campaign there to try and swing the vote in their favour.

How Many Electoral College Votes Are There?

In total, there are 538 Electoral College votes at stake, with the winning candidate needing a majority of that to become US president.

A majority stands at 270 Electoral College votes, which means winning the popular vote doesn't always equate to winning the overall election.

Five presidents have won the presidency without winning the popular vote, which Trump achieved most recently in 2016 after beating Hillary Clinton. Clinton received 2.8 million more votes nationwide than her opponent that year but still lost the election due to missing out on a number of key states and therefore Electoral College votes.

Who will Win the Michigan Electoral College Vote?

At the time of writing, the Democrats are favourites to win in Michigan, which means Kamala Harris would win the state.

In the 2020 election, Joe Biden won Michigan by a small margin and won 50.6% of the vote. This equated to 2,804,040 votes, compared to 2,649,852 votes for Trump which is a difference of 154,188 votes in favour of Biden.

Conversely, Trump won Michigan in the 2016 US Election by an even smaller margin which ended up being just 10,704 votes. Today, Harris is expected to regain control of the Great Lakes State according to the latest odds. Willaim Hill currently have the best odds on the Democrats to win Michigan at 1/2, with BetVictor offering the best odds on the Republicans to win Michigan with 7/4 odds.

Below are the Michigan odds, implied probability and what you'd win with a £10 bet.

Donald Trump (Republican) 7/4 36.4% £27.50
Kamala Harris (Democrat) 1/2 66.7% £15

What Makes Michigan a Key Swing State for Trump and Harris?

Every US state is allocated a certain number of Electoral College votes based on the number of senators and House of Representatives they have.

Michigan has 15 Electoral College Votes, and accounts for a huge number of votes during a US Election, as only New York, California, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, and North Carolina hold more votes.

This makes Michigan a big opportunity for either party given the number of votes each can win during an election.

When Will the Michigan Election Result be Announced?

The polls are set to close at 8pm local time in Michigan which means results may not become clear for a while after.

In 2020, Joe Biden wasn't announced the winner of Michigan until shortly before 6pm local time the next day.

The delay in announcing results may have partly been down to the pandemic as most people voted from home which meant clerks couldn't begin counting until election day. Therefore, we should hopefully see an earlier result this time around.
