ANALYSIS

Royals vs. Yankees Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest MLB Odds for Wednesday, April 16th

The Kansas City Royals will face the New York Yankees for the third time in three days on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium. The Royals are 0-2 on the road against the Bronx Bombers, losing 4-1 and 4-2.

Clarke Schmidt is expected to make his debut for the Yankees on the mound tonight. The 29-year-old right-handed pitcher had a career-best 2.85 ERA in 2024 with a 5-5 record as a starter. Kansas City will likely trot out left-handed pitcher, Kris Bubic, who sports a 0.96 ERA and a 2-1 record through three starts in 2025.

Oddsmakers are currently valuing the Yankees as a home favorite on the moneyline at -150 odds, while the run total is set to an even 8.0, with slight juice on the run total over at -110 odds. The Royals have lost four of their last five games SU, while New York is 3-1 SU in their last four games at home.

Royals vs. Yankees Prediction

The Royals are currently averaging the second-lowest number of runs per game in the MLB at 3.06. Only the Colorado Rockies are worse at 2.65. This gives Schmidt some momentum ahead of his debut on the bump for New York on Wednesday night.

Schmidt didn't face the Royals in 2024. Bubic played the Yankees twice last season but he came in from the bullpen near the end of games, so starting against this lineup is a bit of a different element.

Bubic has increasingly allowed every team he's faced to record more hits, surrendering six hits and three runs to Cleveland during his last start on April 11th. He walked two batters, allowed a home run, and hit a batter with a pitch.

We'll see how Schmidt follows up his 2024 campaign against a struggling offense like Kansas City. Schmidt gave up seven total runs in his final two starts last year against Baltimore and Pittsburgh.

Here some trends worth noting ahead of tonight's tilt between the Royals and Yankees. The favorites have won each of Kansas City's last 10 games played. Seven of the last eight games played between Kansas City and New York have gone under the total runs line. The Royals have lost six straight games as road underdogs and have failed to cover the run line as underdogs five consecutive times.

The Yankees bats can get hot at any moment. However, New York's scored four or fewer runs in eight of their last nine games played. We know how badly the Royals offense is performing, only recording three total runs in Yankee Stadium through two games played. However, despite their struggles, Kansas City has yet to lose three consecutive games in 2025.

The forecast calls for 11 mph winds, 46 degrees, and cloudy. These aren't ideal conditions for a bunch of home runs, even in a hitter-friendly ballpark. Factor in one of the league's worst offenses and a Yankees lineup that hasn't scored more than four runs in eight of its last nine games.

Based on this data, I'll side with the total and bet a unit on under 8 runs at -105 odds.
