NHL Presidents Trophy Odds: Can Alexander Ovechkin, Capitals Still Catch Jets in Final Week?

The Washington Capitals have been one of the best teams in the NHL this season, and caught a lot of recognition for Alexander Ovechkin's goal scoring record. Can they keep the momentum going down the stretch and steal the Presidents Trophy away from the Winnipeg Jets? With only a few days remaining in the regular season, Matt Mackay breaks down the chase for the best regular season NHL team.

NHL Presidents Trophy Odds: Can Alexander Ovechkin, Capitals Still Catch Jets in Final Week?

With roughly five games left in the 2024-25 NHL regular season, the race to win the Presidents Trophy has come down to three teams. This trophy is awarded to the NHL team with the most points during the regular season.

Currently, the Winnipeg Jets lead the league with 110 points. Washington has 107 points to lead all Eastern Conference teams by seven points. The Dallas Stars have 106 points, despite losing three straight games and enduring a historic meltdown against Vancouver on Tuesday night.

PRESIDENTS TROPHY ODDS Breakdown

WINNIPEG JETS (-260) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best odds

It's fairly safe to say that the Jets should wind up winning the Presidents Trophy this season. They have three more points than Washington and four more points than Dallas.

On Thursday night, the Jets play the Stars on the road. This outcome could narrow the race if Winnipeg winds up losing to Dallas on Thursday night.

Even if the Jets lose to the Stars, they'll finish their season with games against Chicago, Edmonton, and Anaheim. If Winnipeg goes 2-2 during their final four games, it should be enough to wind up winning the Presidents Trophy. The Blackhawks and Ducks should be automatic wins, while beating the Stars would eliminate Dallas from contention.

There isn't much value available on this line at -260 odds. I'd recommend staying away, unless you're willing to lay some serious juice. A win over the Stars tonight could shorten the Jets' odds to -500 or worse, which could justify a sizable wager placed on Winnipeg ahead of tonight's tilt in Dallas.

WASHINGTON CAPITALS (+280) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best odds

Alex Ovechkin's successful chase of Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal scoring record has overshadowed the Capitals' successful campaign in 2025. Washington has a +66 goal differential with only 19 regulation losses.

The Capitals have five regular season games left to catch the Jets and finish with the most points. Washington's currently three points behind at 107. A win only nets two points, so this means the Capitals need to likely go 3-2 or 4-1, while the Jets lose to Dallas and Edmonton.

Fortunately for Washington, their schedule is favorable. The Capitals play Carolina at home in D.C. on Thursday night, facing a team that has already made the playoffs but lost three in a row. Then, it's a back-to-back against Columbus, who play horrible defense and have sub-optimal goaltending.

Road games against the Islanders and Penguins close out Washington's regular season. I think there's enough value here, based on schedule, to sprinkle half a unit (0.50) on the Capitals to jump the Jets and win the Presidents Trophy.

DALLAS STARS (+1800) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best odds

The Stars have 106 points and are currently 18-1 to win the Presidents Trophy. Their odds were much shorter prior to their three-game losing slump, which includes their 6-5 overtime loss to the Canucks earlier this week.

If Dallas had held on to their three-goal lead in the final minute of regulation against Vancouver, they'd have an extra point and be tied with Washington at 107 points. Instead, they are four points behind Winnipeg, who they host on Thursday night.

Dallas previously beat the Jets 3-1 at home back in December. Two different road trips to Winnipeg resulted in the Stars losing 4-1 both times.

Dallas only has four games left on their regular season schedule, just like Winnipeg. It's very favorable in terms of winning probability after the Jets game, facing Utah, Detroit, and Nashville.

18-1 is extremely tempting to bet on the Stars' President Trophy odds. If Dallas can find a way to end their three-game losing slump against the Jets tonight, this market becomes very tight during the final three games between Winnipeg and Dallas.

Washington has an extra game to play and one more point than the Stars, which is why they are +280 instead of +1800. Oddsmakers have Dallas favored against Winnipeg tonight. If that is an accurate value, placing a quarter unit (0.25) bet on the Stars to win the Presidents Trophy returns 4.5 units of profit.

Scale down your bet size for the Stars. I think the Jets will likely win the Presidents Trophy. However, don't miss out on the value available on Washington and Dallas at much longer numbers.
