NASCAR Championship Weekend
The NASCAR Championship Weekend is the conclusion of all of NASCAR’s various events, with races held across the weekend to decide the final fate of the season. Before 2001, the first NASCAR Championship Weekend, the NASCAR series finished at different tracks.
Phoenix Raceway has been hosting NASCAR events since 1988, when the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race was held at the track for the first time. However, in 2020, NASCAR decided to move the NASCAR Championship Weekend from Homestead-Miami Speedway to AZ.
The Fiesta Bowl
The Fiesta Bowl has become one of the biggest Bowl games in the US after starting in 1971. It was initially played with the Western Atlantic Conference (WAC) winner. Yet, following the Arizona Wildcats and Arizona Sun Devils’ move to the PAC-10, the Fiesta Bowl ended its affiliation with WAC.
Following 1997, the winner of the Big 12 won an automatic qualification for the Fiesta Bowl. In addition, the Fiesta Bowl joined the Bowl Championship Series and was guaranteed to host the national championship game every four years, which occurred in 1999 and 2003.
In 2014, the Fiesta Bowl became a member of the college football playoffs, hosting a semi-final every three years.
